Wages: $51.48 - $60.26/Hr. (2025)

Position Description:


Plans, organizes, directs, supervises, coordinates, and performs police and emergency functions related to crime prevention, public education, and training. Manages and directs activities on assigned shift, at an incident scene, or on special assignment. The incumbent reports directly to the Public Safety Director (Police Chief).


Full Job Description


Minimum Qualifications: (unless otherwise noted, applicants must meet minimum qualifications at time of application submission)


1. High school diploma / GED equivalent.
2. Minimum of five (5) years cumulative experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer in a city, county, or state police agency. Law enforcement certification must be valid at the time of application/appointment. Applicant must be currently employed as a law enforcement officer and cannot be serving in a probationary period (internal/external) at the time of application.
3. Successful completion of, and certification from, the Washington Basic Law Enforcement Academy (or equivalency academy).


Physical Requirements:


This classification requires a variety of physical activities of varying degrees based on various work circumstances. Required physical activities during non-emergency and emergency situations include walking, standing, sitting, digital dexterity, talking, hearing, and seeing. It also includes running, jumping, balancing, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, lifting, carrying, dragging, throwing, pushing/pulling both objects and people. The incumbent must have the ability to perform strenuous physical activity during emergencies, training/station maintenance, and for prolonged periods. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds and infrequently more with assistance. The employee must be able to safely drive a vehicle, accurately discharge a firearm, and be able to distinguish electronic, mechanical, human sounds, and/or operate required equipment in a safe/lawful manner for the protection/safety of the public, self, and other employees.


Working Conditions:


The incumbent will be inside a building/vehicle 75/80 percent of the day, and outside 20 to 25. percent of the time. The incumbent will seldom be exposed to extreme heat or cold and frequently exposed to wet/humid weather. The incumbent will have frequent exposure to loud/sustained noise/vibrations such as, but not limited to, monitoring three or more radio channels, sirens, horns, and weapon discharges. The incumbent will be exposed to medical hazards such as, but not limited to, blood and air-borne pathogens when responding to traffic accidents and various residences. The incumbent will be exposed to atmospheric hazards such as, but not limited to smoke, fires, industrial hazards, and chemicals. The incumbent may be exposed to physical/verbal circumstances requiring exercise of considerable self-control. The incumbent may be exposed to physical hazards/life threatening situations. Since the employee takes physical custody of persons, there is a chance of physical contact and confrontation. On occasion, the employee may become vulnerable to personal injury.


Terms of Employment:


This is a full-time position offering associated benefits. The incumbent may respond to after-hour emergencies. The incumbent may elect to be a member of Teamsters Union Local 117. The successful candidate must complete a trial period in the position.

Examination Procedure:


In order to be placed on an eligibility list, candidates must successfully complete:


Written Examination - a grade of 70% is considered passing


Multi-component Examination - a grade of 70% is considered passing


Chief's Interview - Pass / Fail


Failure of any component will disqualify the applicant from continuing in the process. Passing scores on the written examination and the multi-component examination will convert to a composite score and be ranked to determine register placement.


Finalists from the register must pass a physical ability test (PAT), background investigation, polygraph, medical and psychological examinations in accordance with Steilacoom Civil Service Rule 6.20. Under this rule, Failure to pass any part of the selection process will keep/remove an applicant from the register.


The testing schedule, to include date/time/location, will be communicated to applicants once the Town has a sufficient number of applications to test for the position of Police Sergeant.
